  • Accessibility | SPLC

ACCESSIBILITY Click here for more detailed disability access information on the centre's AccessAble page Please note that this information is currently under construction, if you are coming to the centre for a booked event and would like more information please get in touch. St Pauls Learning Centre is fully wheelchair accessible, with ramp and on-street access into the building, and a well-maintained lift to the additional floors (see below for a description of our buildings layout and access). We have accessible toilets on all floors and all doorways are 98cm wide as a minimum. Over the coming year we are hoping to improve our accessibility to account for both hard of hearing and seeing members of the public. This includes adding a hearing loop at our reception, contrasting visual markers around the building and braille signposting. If you have any questions, queries or recommendations around accessibility, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Building Description The building consists of two blocks set at 90 degrees from each other. The main entrance to the Learning Centre is accessed from the Grosvenor rd side. There are 6 steps leading directly up to the main doors, to the right of which there is a ramp with a 180 degree right turn roughly around 5metres along to face back towards the entrance. If approaching from the ramp, the doors will be on your left. The main doors open outwards automatically on approach when we are fully open to the public. There are rails either side of the doorway to mark the space. To the left of this there is a protruding postbox on the wall with a fob access panel on the to the right roughly ?cm from the ground. There is also a doorbell that rings through to the office by the main entrance. Inside the foyer, the reception booth is at an angle on the right around 2m ahead. Please be aware there is a pillar located 4m straight ahead from the entrance. To the left is the main stairwell, to the right of which is the lift with the call button on the left and control buttons on the left as you enter. To access other floors via the stairs there are 3 lots of steps spiraling to the right. The floor corridors are straight ahead through a doorway to the left and right at roughly 45degrees from your present position. Offices and toilets along the left corridor, offices on the left side and toilets to the right. The accessible toilet is the second door along. To access the corridor on the right, housing further offices and our training, meeting rooms and art rooms, there is a doorway to the right. All rooms in this corridor are on the right-hand side and windows on the left. These layouts are the same for both upper floors.

A listening adventure exploring St. Paul's experienced on your smartphone DUPPY HUNTER: A LOCALS' GUIDE TO ST PAULS A listening adventure exploring St. Paul's experienced on your smartphone ABOUT JOIN THE ADVENTURE! CREDITS 'Some people call dem duppy. Dem is the half of we spirit that stay on earth. The other half gone to the ancestors. Most is good, some is pure trouble. Some well, they just like mischief.' About: A duppy has gone loose in St Pauls and leading duppy hunter, Josie needs your help tracking it down. In most cases detecting, capturing and returning duppies is straightforward but this Duppy teases Josie with clues to its whereabouts and its next potential victim. You will be Josie’s eyes and ears, helping her to solve the riddles the duppy leaves on its trail. What's a Duppy? A ghost or restless spirit is known as a ‘Duppy’ in Jamaica, or a Jumbie in many smaller Caribbean islands. Traditionally, a good duppy is usually a deceased family member or friend who ‘dreams you’ – meaning they appear in your dreams and give you advice or information. Get Started! Text Duppy Hunter to 07481340803 to start your journey. Chrome and Safari are the two best browsers to run the experience. The story starts at the Trinity Centre where Josie first learns about her mission. You can either: walk over to the Trinity centre to start your journey (A) or pick up the story from Newfoundland Road (B). To get to Newfoundland Road from the Learning Centre, walk across St Paul’s Green then turn right down St Nicolas Street to the corner of Newfoundland Road. Once you are at Newfoundland Road facing the bridge, forward the audio trail to 18 mins. Josie is just about to encounter the Duppy. Please refer to the Advice Document and Manual for full instructions, a map of the trail and troubleshooting support. Next Credits Bubbling with magical realism, Duppy Hunter: A Local’s Guide to St Pauls, Bristol, is the third instalment from ENDS & TALES by Tamasha and Coney – a series of immersive smart phone adventures on foot, inspired by the untold stories and histories around us. ABOUT US Previously a Council run building, the St Pauls Learning Centre was under threat of closure due to years of Government cuts and austerity. In May 2015 the building was put to tender via the Community Asset Transfer programme and caught the attention of The Ethical Property Company (EPC), an organisation that began life in the area many years previously. Recognising the value the Learning Centre brought to the community, EPC could see clear potential to increase the Learning Centre's offering and become a hive of socially impactful activity with the help of EPC's building management expertise. The Ethical Property Company acquired a 15 year lease of the centre and since then have worked to create a self-sustaining and thriving community hub. The Ethical Property Company is a social business providing office and meeting space to over 1,000 charities, not-for-profit organisations and voluntary groups across the UK each year. Tenants work in a variety of sectors from homelessness to refugee support, sustainable transport to animal welfare, drug rehabilitation to disability awareness and many many more, always with the aim of making our society and planet a better place for all. For more information visit www.ethicalproperty.co.uk . The St Pauls Learning Centre logo is based upon the Sankofa, a symbol that represents the importance of learning from the past. Sankofa is a word in the Twi language of Ghana that translates as "Go back and get it" (san - to return; ko - to go; fa - to fetch, to seek and take) and also refers to the Asante Adinkra symbol represented either by a bird with its head turned backwards taking an egg off its back, or as a stylised heart shape.
