About the event
Join us for our next Inspiring Women Talk with the fantastic Laila Garzón Deguer & Valentina Moya Espinoza
Laila Garzón Deguer is a feminist and activist in Argentina and Valentina Moya Espinoza is a feminist and activist for the Chilean collective memory conservation. Together, they run the Latinas in Bristol CIC, an organization that works to improve Latin American women’s lives in Bristol.
They will speak about the Ni una menos (NOT A WOMAN LESS) feminist movement in Argentina in 2015, and how the movement changed the agenda in politics as well as the use of language on violence against women.
#NiUnaMenos began resulting from the rape and murder of 14 y/o girl. This movement spread across Latin America, involving human rights, and the fight for abortion law. Laila will speak about Argentina and Valentina will speak on “Las Tesis” from Chile.
- Femicide numbers will be referenced and are taken from this movement.
- Many of the protest activities are connected to art.
- The movement was inspired by The Mothers and the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo", women fighting to find their children and grandchildren who were kidnapped and disappeared in the dictatorship in Argentina in the 70s.
- The movement expresses the pain and horrors of femicide with art, lots of colours, flags, banners, choreography and sound. The Tesis choreography went global
