About the event
This exhibition explores histories of Black and South Asian feminist activists in postwar Britain. During the 1970s and 1980s, Black and South Asian women came together in various community and activist groups such as The Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent (OWAAD), Brixton Black Women’s Group and United Black Women’s Action Group. In these collectives and as individual activists, they supported campaigns for equity in housing, healthcare, and labour relations.
They also spearheaded campaigns relating to anti-deportation and immigration, reproductive rights and education. For the first time, we bring together collections currently housed at the Bishopsgate Institute (London) and the Feminist Archive South (Bristol) in order to celebrate the stories of these powerful women.
You can view the exhibition at the St Paul’s Learning Centre (Cafe space) and its sister exhibition at Bristol Library throughout March 2026.
