Festive Photogram Workshop

What you will make: On this special festive workshop you will be able to experiment in the darkroom to create fun photographic images that will make delightful seasonal greeting cards. Led by experienced tutor, Ruth Jacobs

Description of activities: Photograms are images made in the darkroom, by placing objects and shapes onto photographic paper, exposing to light, and then developing. You may bring some Xmas decorations or small festive themed objects to create images with during the workshop, or use objects provided.

Skill level: No experience necessary - complete novices and experienced photographers welcome!

Cost: £20 including all materials. 

Age: Under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult. No more than one child per adult as space in limited in the darkroom.

Batik & Frame Making Workshop

What you will make:
In this one day workshop you will make a framed batik of your own design.

Description of activities:
Use hand tools and softwood to assemble a frame for your artwork and then whilst the frame is drying use batik technique to create a design on fabric. Assemble your artwork ready for display.

Skill level:
This workshop is suitable for woodwork and batik beginners but all skill levels are welcome. Minimum age for the workshop is 14 but under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

Cost
£50 per person, maximum of 10 per group.

Make an Embroidered Brooch

What you will make:
A beautiful embroidered brooch.

Description of activities:
Learn basic embroidery stitches to create a simple embroidered image. Choose from a range of different designs, or come up with your own idea. After you have sewn your design, set it into a mini wooden embroidery hoop brooch, for a unique accessory or gift to take home with you.

A fun, relaxed atmosphere, and all materials provided.

Skill level:
No experience necessary, there will be plenty of help on hand. Please bear in mind the brooches are small (4-5cm diameter), so a steady hand and good eyesight are needed.

Minimum age: 18, or 13 if accompanied by an adult

Cost
£35, including all tools and materials. Maximum of 16 per group.

Make a pinhole photograph selfie and solargraph camera

What you will make:
In this two hour workshop you will make a pinhole camera and use it to create an ‘Awfullogramme selfie’. A ‘self-portrait technique invented by Justin, creating a selfie undistorted by lenses! We will then adapt the camera so you leave with a camera which can take a solargraph image of the sun crossing the sky over 5 months.

Description of activities:
The pinhole camera will be made from found materials and loaded with light sensitive paper. After exposing the paper, you will develop the image in darkroom chemistry lit by a red light enabling the participant to magically view the image appearing. After viewing the image in positive, you will adapt your camera to enable it to be installed at home to make a 5 month image of the sun.

Skill level:
The workshop will be fine for people with no experience in photography before, although all children below 16 need to be accompanied by an adult. Minimum age for the workshop is 8 years old.

Cost
£20 per person, maximum of 15 per group.

Make a Jungle Print

A fun and inclusive session that will show you how to design and create your own stamps. Get a taste for print with this hands-on workshop and experiment with textures by creating jungle leaves, patterns and animals. You will produce several stamps, which will then be combined to produce a collaborative jungle print, exploring both colour and scale.

This workshop is ideal for beginners who are interested in exploring printmaking or experienced printmakers looking to play with a new technique.

All materials are provided and you’ll be sent a copy of the final jungle print!

Tutor: Grace Kress

Grace has experience of running workshops in a variety of settings. She designs workshops and projects with the groups needs in mind, always aiming to empower the people she works with, develop their confidence, and most importantly, ensure they are enjoying themselves!

She is passionate about print; inspired by the textures and patterns you can create and loves that no two prints are ever the same - just like us humans!

Skill level: Beginners

Minimum age: 16

Cost: £20, including materials and an A4 printed copy of the finished jungle print.

Mask Making Workshop

What you will make: Over the two sessions you will design, construct and decorate a mask.

Description of activities: Participants will be supported to design and construct a mask, which will be left to dry and decorated the following week. There are different construction options. People can build up a basic mask on their face by applying strips of wet modroc (plaster soaked material), which is removed and left to dry. Alternatively for more elaborate constructions people can work onto a face mould. This can be built up with clay or foil and cardboard and then covered with modroc. The following week the dry plaster shell is removed from the base and decorated.

There will also be cardboard and other materials to make constructions for the head without using plaster.

Skill level: Some construction experience would be good but support will be given and masks can be as complicated as participants choose. Bristol Art for All encourages mixed aged and ability groups. The minimum age is 12 we request children under 14 are accompanied by an adult.

Cost: £35 for full price and £20 for concession (people on benefits)

Paper Flower Art

Come and have some fun and create a beautiful piece of 3D art for your home. We will use paper to create a beautiful 3D wall flower with lights that will go in any room in your home and is also great for a child's bedroom or nursery. Whether you have never crafted before or are a more experienced crafter then this workshop is for you. All you need to do is come along and enjoy yourself and go home with a unique piece of art. All materials are provided but do bring a large plastic bag to protect your work for the journey home.

Meditation Stool Woodwork & Upholstery Taster Workshop

What you will make:
In this one day workshop you will make a seiza style meditation stool using softwood and upholstery materials.

Description of activities:
Spend the morning making the seiza stool using hand tools and woodwork joinery. We’ll break for lunch whilst the wood glue dries and then upholster the seat in the afternoon. End the day with an optional group meditation.

Skill level:
This workshop is suitable for woodwork and upholstery beginners but all skill levels are welcome. Minimum age for the workshop is 14 but under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

What you will make:
An envelope purse, clutch or tablet case made from leather or suede

Description of activities:
Using a simple no-sew technique, make and envelope purse, clutch or tablet case from leather or suede. Customise by lining with your choice of fabric or by adding decorative detail and fastenings. Come and make your own unique accessory or gift to take home.  

A fun, relaxed atmosphere.

Feel free to bring your own fabric to line your purse/clutch/tablet case, there will also be a limited range available to buy at a small additional cost. All other materials included.

Learn how to make a professional looking drum lampshade which can be used with a pendant light or table lamp.

Choose a fabric that you like and bring it along to make a unique lamp for your home or as a gift. You can also customise it with decorative trim.

Cyanotype Workshop

What will you make: Beautiful bespoke Cyanotype prints to take away.

Description of activity: Each person will gain an insight into this historical photographic printing process dating back to 1842. This hands-on workshop will have you create a light sensitive chemical, coat your own paper and create beautiful Prussian blue prints, giving you an insight into this fascinating process. You will also be given information to enable you to carry on at home if you wish.

Black & White 1 Day Photo Workshop

What you will make:

You will be able to make beautiful black and white photographic prints in the darkroom on this enjoyable and informative one day workshop, led by expert tutor, Ruth Jacobs.

Description of activities:

Bring your film camera, we will take photos using black and white film, develop negatives, then print contact sheets and enlargements. Darkroom chemistry and processes will be introduced and explained, so that participants can use darkrooms independently following the workshop.

Skill level:

Suitable for beginners, as well as those seeking to refresh their darkroom skills.
